The Roman poet Marcus Valerius proclaimed: “Uncto Corduba laetior Venafro, Histria nec minus absoluta testa” -> “Cordoba, you are richer than oily Venafro and as perfect as the olive oil of Istria.”

By the 19th century, olive oil from Istria had already earned a reputation for its excellent quality. Today, the region’s olive oil production continues to be a proud tradition. Istria has been named the best olive oil-producing region in the world seven times by the Italian guide Flos Olei.

The rise of modern olive oil producers

In the past few decades, Istria has seen a renaissance in olive oil production. The region has embraced new technologies while maintaining traditional methods of cultivation and production. Today, Istria is home to over 1,000 olive oil producers, ranging from small family-owned farms to larger commercial estates.
